Per il rinnovarsi periodico delle sue corna, che sono paragonate anche ai rami degli alberi, assumono un valore allegorico di sviluppo e di unione tra le forze superiori e quelle inferiori.Quindi le corna di questo animale si ergono a simbolo della longevità e del ciclo delle rinascite successive. Nella leggenda greca di Ciparisso, la morte del Cervo è all'origine del Cipresso, simbolo dell'immortalità e dell'eternità.

Da tempi antichissimi nell'area circumpolare questo regale animale è associato al simbolismo del Sole e della luce, incarnandone gli aspetti di creazione e civilizzazione. È contrapposto nel simbolismo al Toro, elemento della forza cieca generatrice e tipico delle precedenti civiltà matriarcali. In questa contrapposizione, assume il significato di animale tipico della civiltà indoeuropea.È il principio paterno che si scontra con la "civiltà della madre"; la virilità olimpica contro il mito taurino e materno della fecondità. In Grecia i Cervi erano consacrati agli déi della purezza e della luce, come Apollo e Athena.
